<h4>How is an Audiogram Structured?</h4><ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li><p style="margin-left:0px;"><strong>X-axis (horizontal): </strong>The x-axis of an audiogram shows the different frequencies (pitches) in Hertz (Hz). It ranges from low frequencies, such as 125 Hertz (e.g., rumbling thunder), to high frequencies, around 8000 Hertz (e.g., whistling). The range between 500 and 6000 Hertz is especially important for understanding spoken language, as most speech sounds fall within this area.</p></li><li><p style="margin-left:0px;"><strong>Y-axis (vertical): </strong>The y-axis in the audiogram represents volume (loudness) in decibels (dB). At the top of the axis are soft sounds, for example around 0 decibels (the hearing threshold), while loud sounds, such as 120 decibels (e.g., a siren), are shown at the bottom of the axis.<br>The hearing threshold is the softest sound a person can still hear.</p></li><li><p style="margin-left:0px;"><strong>Data points: </strong>During a hearing test, specific data points are measured to determine at what volume and pitch a person can hear with each ear. These points are marked with symbols: typically, circles for the left ear and crosses for the right ear.</p></li><li><p style="margin-left:0px;"><strong>Hearing curves: </strong>These are the lines in the audiogram that indicate how well someone can hear at different frequencies. They are created by measuring how loud a sound must be at various frequencies for the person to just barely hear it. These points are connected to form the hearing curves for both ears—usually red for the right ear and blue for the left ear.</p></li></ul><h4>How to Read/Interpret an Audiogram?</h4><p style="margin-left:0px;"><strong>Step 1: </strong>First, you should familiarize yourself with the levels and labels. In this case, we see the colored stages of hearing loss along with the classifications such as “normal hearing,” “mild hearing loss,” “moderate hearing loss,” etc. The “normal hearing threshold” is marked in a bold green color.</p><p style="margin-left:0px;"><strong>Step 2: </strong>Next, take a look at the plotted curves. This allows for targeted action to address hearing loss in the affected ear.</p><h4>What Does HL Mean?</h4><p>HL (Hearing Level) is a relative unit of measurement expressed in decibels. It indicates how much a person’s hearing deviates from normal hearing ability. This representation is commonly used for clinical evaluation of hearing loss and for interpreting audiograms.</p>
